CAPTIVATED: unlocking what makes us tick, click, and buy, with psychology-backed, consumer behavior tips and shortcuts.
Today’s Edition of Captivated: How Fresh Starts help get more done and sell more products.
Happy 1st day of Fall!
We’re back from our summer break, just in time for exciting new content from your feedback.

So let’s talk about when you completely ignore your to-do list for days, and then suddenly get the urge to organize your whole life on a random Monday morning.
Or start a new habit because it’s the first of the month and feels ...right. (Great Lock-in of 2025 I’m looking at you).
Or finally tackle that idea you’ve been putting off all summer (no judgement), because the weather started to shift, the smell of pumpkin spice is in the air, and it feels like a good time for a fresh start.
Let’s talk about why this is, what’s going on in our brains, and how we can tap into this for our own benefit.

.. Brain Science-Backed: The Psychology Behind It ..
Psychologists call it a temporal landmark, a moment that feels like a new chapter.
Think: Mondays, birthdays, the start of a new month or season. Your brain uses these moments to mentally separate the “old you” from the “new you.”
Our brains encode time in segments, and these ‘landmarks’ create a psychological ‘boundary’ that increases our sense of control and possibility.
That clean-slate feeling is called the Fresh Start Effect, and it gives our motivation a natural spike. It taps into our brain’s tendency to group time into chunks, which makes us feel like past behaviors are behind us, and new habits are easier to start.
Our brain sees a fresh start as a chance to do better. Even if nothing has changed, and the level of work is the same.
🥷
.. Use this Psychology Shortcut for Yourself ..
1: Rename Your Goal for Fall
Take anything you’ve stalled on and relabel it as your Fall 2025 Project or September List. Your brain will treat it like something new.
2: Pick Today as Your Day 1
Declare today as Day 1 of your next big thing, whether it’s Q4 prep, a new routine, or finally starting that project (you know the one). It’s OK if you missed the Great Lock-in kick-off, and you don’t even need to wait for a Monday.
🥷
.. Steal this Psychology Strategy for Products ..
Companies use this strategy all the time, from selling back-to-school items, new planners, and of course gyms every single January. Here’s tiny ways to tap in to this psychology to sell more:
1: Launch a “Fall Reset” Offer
Repackage an existing product or service with a seasonal twist. For example: September Starter Pack, “Fresh Start” 1:1, Fall 5-Day Reset.
2: Use Landmarks in Messaging
Weave in subtle temporal cues that align with how people want to feel; such as: “It’s the perfect time to reset your routine" or “Start fresh this season with just one small shift”.
3: Create a Day 1 Experience
We can lower the mental barrier to action and make our products feel like an intentional beginning. Add a “Welcome to Day 1” message for new customers or include a short Day 1 checklist or quick win.
✌️
.. tl;dr & captivated wrap-up ..
So yeah, that sudden urge to get it together today, is probably the Fresh Start Effect in action, triggered by a temporal landmark like the first day of fall.
Our brains see it as a reset. Motivation spikes and things feel more doable again, even though its the same amount of work. Seems small, but that’s the beauty of our brains. We can work smarter, do less, and get more.
Whether you're using that energy to tackle a to-do list or refresh how you show up for your customers, today is a great day to start something new.
Enjoy the kickoff to Fall (and whatever you start today)!
👋 Until next time,
Profit Nic
