THE PROBLEM:
When you’re staring at a long to-do list…
when you have five big ideas to pick from…
when you open your laptop and don’t even know where to start…
That frozen feeling can be misinterpreted as a discipline or procrastination problem,
or have you thinking, “I just need to lock in and try harder.”
It’s actually decision overload. It’s just too much.
Your brain is getting hit with too many options, and it shuts down to protect its energy.
This is called the Paradox of Choice, and last week we talked bout how it blocks customers from converting; and it also blocks our own productivity.
Essentially, the more options you have, the harder it becomes to choose, and the more likely you are to do nothing at all.
🧠
THE BRAIN SCIENCE:
Your brain is wired to conserve mental energy, and choosing between options can cost more mental energy than doing the task itself.
Every extra option adds mental friction.
Once you pass a certain point, your prefrontal cortex starts to get overloaded. That’s when you feel stuck, indecisive, or suddenly convinced the task “doesn’t matter right now.”
Research from psychologists Sheena Iyengar and Mark Lepper shows that when people had 24 choices, they were far less likely to take action than when they only had only 6.
When options pile up, decisions feel harder, and you’re more likely to delay or avoid choosing at all. This is known as the Paradox of Choice.
(Here’s how to tap into this to your benefit: Continues Below.)

THE BRAIN HACK: Try it this week:
What to do:
#1) Shrink your choices to 1-3 options, max.
Instead of asking yourself, “What should I work on today?”
Ask: “Out of these two things, which one matters most right now?”
#2) Create a default.
A default removes the need to choose every time.
Example: “Every morning after coffee, I start with writing for 10 minutes.”
No thinking, or weighing options. You can get going immediately.
#3) Use the “one decision for the week” rule for recurring tasks.
Pick one default time or one default way you’ll handle a recurring task, decide once, and keep that same choice all week.
Choose one default eating plan for the week
(“On Sundays, I choose 1 go-to breakfast & 1 go-to lunch, like eggs for breakfast & a Caesar salad for lunch.”)
Choose one default deep-work window for the week
(“Every day at 10, I work uninterrupted for 45 minutes”).
Choose one slot for customer calls
(“Thursdays at 1 is my standing call window”).
When your brain isn’t re-deciding the same thing every day, it follows through with way less friction.
Your brain moves faster when it’s not sifting through a buffet of options. Minimize the options, and you minimize the cognitive load by working with how your brain naturally operates.
Give it a try and see if it helps.
